EMDR Therapy
Feeling stuck in talk therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy offers a different way to create lasting change.
If you have tried traditional therapy and feel like you keep talking about the same things without much shifting, you are not alone. Many people understand their experiences well, yet their anxiety, stress, or emotional reactions continue.
EMDR therapy takes a more structured approach. It focuses less on talking through events and more on helping your brain process them so they no longer feel as intense or disruptive. The goal is to help distressing experiences settle, rather than stay active in the present.
EMDR therapy is paced, intentional, and tailored to your needs. Sessions are designed to support meaningful change while keeping you grounded and in control.
EMDR therapy is a form of psychotherapy that helps people intentionally reprocess distressing experiences so they can develop a more adaptive view of themselves and what they have been through. Rather than focusing on repeated discussion of the event, EMDR works by helping the brain process experiences that remain emotionally active and continue to influence thoughts, feelings, and reactions in the present.
EMDR can be helpful for processing a traumatic event, a specific fear or phobia, or long-standing negative beliefs about yourself that feel hard to change. Many people who seek EMDR therapy have a good understanding of their history and patterns, yet notice that certain emotional reactions continue to show up despite insight and effort.
When an experience is overwhelming, the brain may not fully process it at the time it occurs. Instead, aspects of the memory can remain stored in a way that keeps triggering anxiety, emotional distress, or physical tension later on. EMDR therapy uses a structured, evidence-based approach to help the brain complete that processing so the memory feels less intense and more integrated.
EMDR sessions follow specific protocols and procedures. The work is focused and intentional, and you are not required to retell your story in detail or relive events repeatedly. The goal is to help your system respond differently so the experience no longer feels as present or disruptive.
EMDR therapy is often used to address trauma, anxiety, and stress-related concerns. It can also be helpful when emotional reactions feel automatic, when certain fears or memories continue to interfere with daily life, or when negative beliefs about yourself keep resurfacing. Many high-functioning adults find EMDR helpful when they feel frustrated that traditional talk therapy has not fully resolved these patterns.
If EMDR therapy is a good fit for you, we will create an individualized treatment plan that clearly identifies which experiences or memories we want to target. Treatment begins with preparation, including grounding skills and emotional regulation strategies, to ensure you feel supported and stable before any reprocessing work begins.
EMDR sessions are structured and collaborative. You remain present and in control throughout the process, and we move at a pace that feels appropriate for you. EMDR is integrated thoughtfully into therapy rather than used as a one-size-fits-all approach.
EMDR sessions at RueCare PLLC are conducted virtually using a HIPAA-compliant video platform. Sessions are 60-90 minutes in length. Treatment is tailored to your goals, history, and readiness, and EMDR is used when it aligns with your needs.
EMDR therapy may be a good option if you feel stuck despite effort and insight, or if certain reactions feel out of proportion to your current circumstances. We will decide together whether EMDR is appropriate and whether the timing is right.
